The reporter has raised a safety concern in relation to an unlit obstacle in close proximity to a helicopter landing site at Darwin aerodrome.
The reporter states a 150 m pole (to be used for future apron lighting) has been erected adjacent to taxiway Uniform within 200 m of a helipad at the eastern apron. The reporter advised the Aerodrome Reporting Officer (ARO) team is aware of the recently installed obstacle, however a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has not been raised alerting pilots of the hazard.
The reporter is concerned the obstacle potentially impedes the flight path of helicopters approaching or departing the helicopter landing site which is especially hazardous during night operations. Furthermore, the reporter queries why the pole was not illuminated to enhance visibility at night when initially installed.
Aerodrome operator response is as follows:
After we spoke with the ATSB the following NOTAM was raised:
C275/25
HELI OPR TWY U1 CAUTION LGT TWR 108FT AGL ERECTED
COMMISSIONED 30M N TWY U1 C/L
FROM 03 040233 TO 06 030600 EST
Today, (2 days later), the apron flood lighting pole (hinged at base) was lowered to a horizontal position.
The above NOTAM has been cancelled.
The pole will remain lowered until a red obstruction light is installed.
When erected a NOTAM will be raised advising a ‘LIT’ LGT TWR.
The ATSB did not seek comment from the aviation regulator, CASA.
