The ATSB is investigating a collision with terrain involving Robinson R22 Beta, VH-8BW, about 30 km north of Southport Airport, Queensland on 26 February 2025.

During the low-level training operations, the helicopter encountered a gust of wind and subsequently the crew lost control of the helicopter which collided with terrain.  The 2 occupants sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The evidence collection phase of the ATSB investigation will involve interviewing involved parties and gathering information from any recorded data, examine operator procedures and maintenance records.

The ATSB has commenced the examination and analysis of the initial evidence collected.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
