The ATSB is investigating an occurrence where a lack of coordination resulted in multiple aircraft operating in close proximity near the Tenterfield and Wallangarra fire ground on 31 October 2023.

It was reported that due to the lack of coordination, the crew of a number of aircraft reported multiple aircraft operating in close proximity.

The evidence collection phase of the investigation will involve interviewing multiple agencies involved in the coordination of the aircraft during the firefighting activities.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
