The ATSB is investigating a collision with terrain involving a Cessna 172M, registered VH-JUA, about 1 km north-east of Murwillumbah, New South Wales, on 15 October 2023.

During a missed approach, the aircraft did not climb as expected and the pilot conducted a forced landing. The aircraft subsequently collided with terrain resulting in minor injuries to the pilot, who was the sole occupant. The aircraft was substantially damaged.

The final report has been drafted and is undergoing internal review to ensure the report adequately and accurately reflects the evidence collected, analysis, and agreed findings.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
