The ATSB is investigating a runway incursion involving a Piper PA-28-161, registered VH-ENL, and Bombardier DHC-8-315, registered VH-TQH, at Mildura Aerodrome, Victoria on 6 June 2023.

The crew of VH-TQH commenced their take-off from runway 09. A short time later, the pilot of VH-ENL commenced their take-off from runway 36. As the pilot of VH-ENL started their take-off roll, they observed VH-TQH airborne and climbing as it crossed runway 36. As VH-TQH had now crossed runway 36, the pilot of VH-ENL elected to continue their take-off.

The evidence collection phase of the investigation will involve interviewing the flight crews from each aircraft, as well as any witnesses, retrieving and reviewing recorded data, and the collection of other relevant evidence.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
