The ATSB is investigating an operational non-compliance event involving GIE Avions De Transport Regional ATR72, P2-ATR, Cairns Airport, Queensland, on 4 September 2017.

Prior to departure from Cairns Airport, the flight crew entered an incorrect setting into the flight management system. During the initial climb after take-off, the aircraft began a turn away from the assigned heading. Air traffic control detected the deviation and contacted the flight crew, the flight crew stopped the turn and returned the aircraft to the assigned heading. The flight continued to the destination without further incident.

As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the flight crew and gather additional information, including:

  • Recorded flight data
  • Air traffic control data and recordings.
