The ATSB is investigating an occurrence involving a Cirrus SR22, registration VH-DCB, about 30 km east of Nyngan Airport, New South Wales, on 24 January 2025. The aircraft was operating on a private flight from Gold Coast, Queensland, to Mildura, Victoria.

During cruise, the pilot received a low oil pressure warning, and the engine subsequently failed. Fire was observed emanating from the engine cowling and smoke was observed in the cockpit. The pilot conducted a forced landing on a highway.

To date, the ATSB investigation has included:

  • interviewing the pilot
  • examination of maintenance and pilot records
  • analysis of recorded data

The final report has been drafted and is undergoing internal review to ensure the report adequately and accurately reflects the evidence collected, analysis, and agreed findings.

The final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
