The ATSB is investigating a runway excursion, tail strike and go-around involving a Cessna 172R, registered VH-EWW, at Gold Coast Airport, Queensland, on 6 February 2024.
During a training flight, the aircraft landed long and overran the runway. The instructor took over control of the aircraft from the student pilot and conducted a go-around, during which the aircraft sustained a tail strike.
The ATSB evidence collection phase will include:
- interviewing the flight crew and air traffic controller
- reviewing recorded radar and audio data, and CCTV footage.
A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
