The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is investigating an incident involving a Virgin Australia Boeing 737-8FE, registered VH-YFT, which was provided information by air traffic control (ATC) that was different to the information held in other ATC systems.

The aircraft was conducting a passenger flight from Brisbane to Sydney on 19 October 2022, when ATC issued it a standard terminal arrival route (STAR) clearance for Sydney Airport runway 34L. However, this did not match the runway information in the traffic sequencing system Maestro.

The error was identified by another ATC controller, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 16L. As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview involved parties, examine recorded data, review relevant procedures and collect other evidence as required.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
