The ATSB is investigating the derailment of freight train Y279 near Traveston, Queensland, on 23 February 2022.

At 0319, freight train Y279 entered an area of track washed out by floodwaters near Traveston, Queensland resulting in derailment of 2 locomotives and 4 wagons. The single driver was not injured. The investigation is continuing.

The evidence collection phase of the investigation includes examination of the accident site and wreckage by ATSB investigators, and the collection of other relevant evidence, including interviews, recorded data, weather information, and rail and train operator procedures. 

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
