The ATSB is investigating the collision with terrain involving Cessna 172, VH-CBB, 31 km west of Mittagong, NSW on 22 March 2020.
On approach to the private airstrip, the pilot reported the aircraft was affected by extreme turbulence and was unable to reach the runway under full power. The approach to the runway was over a ravine and the aircraft was below the level of the runway. In anticipation, the pilot cut the engine power over heavily forested area where the aircraft collided with terrain at low speed.
As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilot and gather any other relevant information.
Should any safety critical information be discovered at any time during the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify operators and regulators so appropriate and timely safety action can be taken.
A final report will be published at the conclusion of the investigation.
