Summary
On 25 April 2026, freight train 0348 passed signal 4 at Wallan at danger and passed through the Wallan – Whittlesea Road crossing. The level crossing protection started to activate a few seconds before the train passed through the crossing, and a near collision with road vehicles was reported.
The Office of the Chief Investigator is investigating the incident under the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003 (Cth) in accordance with a collaboration agreement with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. However, should a critical safety issue be identified during the investigation, relevant parties will be immediately notified so safety action can be taken.
