The ATSB is investigating a flap overspeed event of an Airbus A320, registered VH-VQL, near Sydney Airport on 9 May 2018.
The first officer was the pilot flying. During the approach to runway 34L, at about 1,200 ft, the flight crew elected to conduct a go-around because the approach was not stabilised. Some elements of the go-around procedure were not conducted successfully, which resulted in the airspeed exceeding the flap limit speed. The captain took over control and the go-around was completed.
As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the flight crew, examine recorded data from the aircraft, and gather other relevant information.
A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties so appropriate safety action can be taken.
