The ATSB is investigating the ditching of Robinson R44, VH-WRR, 49 km N of Hamilton Island Aerodrome, Queensland, on 8 November 2017.

During cruise, the engine lost partial power and the helicopter was unable to maintain altitude. The pilot conducted an autorotation and deployed the emergency flotation system, landing on water. The crew and passengers were not injured  and were rescued by a local vessel. The helicopter was subsequently submerged in the water. As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilot and obtain additional information.

A final investigation report will be released following the conclusion of the ATSB’s investigation.
