Confusing symbology on the updated Brisbane 4 Departure (Radar) SID in the Aeronautical Information Package

AR2020-00018

Concern summary

Safety concern regarding Confusing symbology on the updated Brisbane 4 Departure (Radar) SID in the Aeronautical Information Package.

Reporter's deidentified concern

SIDs have been changed from ‘At or above altitudes’ to ‘At’ altitudes.

The wording of the Brisbane 3 SID states ‘at 600ft and not before the departure end of runway (DER) turn to assigned heading...’ but the diagrammatical representation now shows a line above and below 600.

According to the chart legend, this symbology means that the aircraft has to cross at that altitude, which is not possible for high performance aircraft that will reach 600 ft before the DER.

Safety outcome:

A review of SID symbology has been completed with editorial amendments to be included in DAP 167, effective 17 June 2021.

Brisbane 4 Departure (Radar) will be amended to replace all initial turn altitudes from ‘At’ to ‘At or Above’. The textual and symbol description of the departure will be amended to improve presentation of the dual requirement.
