Near collision between train 3DA2 and road rail vehicle RRV37, near Katherine, Northern Territory, on 16 June 2026

Summary

The ATSB is investigating a near collision between train 3DA2 and road-rail vehicle RRV37, near Katherine, Northern Territory, on 16 June 2026.

Southbound Aurizon freight train 3DA2 and northbound Aurizon road-rail vehicle RRV37 were proceeding under their respective authorities issued by Aurizon network control. 3DA2 and RRV37 came to a stop at a location approximately 10 km north of Katherine, with a separation distance between vehicles of approximately 25 metres.

The evidence collection phase of the investigation will involve:

• interviewing involved parties
• retrieving and reviewing recorded data
• collection of other relevant information.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. However, should a critical safety issue be identified during the investigation, relevant parties will be immediately notified so safety action can be taken.
