Summary
The ATSB is investigating the grounding of the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Cape Falcon, off the port of Gladstone, Queensland, on 18 September 2026.
On the afternoon of 18 September, while approaching the designated bunkering anchorage at Gladstone, Queensland, the fully laden bulk carrier grounded to the south of the anchorage.
Initial refloating efforts undertaken with the aid of tugs and a pilot were unsuccessful. There were no reported injuries, hull breach or pollution.
The ATSB has commenced a safety investigation into this incident, and is gathering evidence from relevant parties for analysis.
A final report will be published at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety message be identified at any time during the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify the operators of the ship, and other relevant parties so that appropriate and timely safety action can be taken.
