Summary

The ATSB is investigating a runway incursion and near collision involving a Jetstar Airways Airbus A320, registered VH-VGQ, and a ground vehicle, at Townsville Airport, Queensland, on 7 October 2026.

The A320 was operating as JQ908, scheduled from Brisbane to Townsville.

The investigation is being conducted under the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003 with joint expertise from the ATSB and Defence Flight Safety Bureau (DFSB). The ATSB Commission remains responsible for the investigation and will release a report under section 25 of the Act.

During the approach to land on runway 01, the A320 flight crew observed a white van entering the runway at the threshold. The vehicle was stopped at the outer edge of the runway as the aircraft passed at approximately 50 ft above ground level. The aircraft subsequently landed and the vehicle resumed crossing the runway.

The ATSB has commenced the examination and analysis of the initial evidence collected. To date, the ATSB has examined recorded video and audio, interviewed involved parties and collected other relevant information.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
