The TSI Act 2003 provides a legislative basis for the ATSB to conduct rail safety investigations on the Defined Interstate Rail Network. The ATSB employs people with extensive rail experience and continues on the safety investigation experience of its aviation and marine investigations. The investigation role is linked to the ATSB's objective of safe transport, focuses on national outcomes, and is independent of industry and Governments' regulatory role.
