The ATSB is investigating an encounter with flood waters by Train 6792 at Little Banyan Creek, Tully, Queensland, on 7 March 2018.
At about 0615 on 7 March 2018, an Aurizon freight train, designation 6792, was travelling south on approach to Tully in far-north Queensland. The driver of the train had observed flood waters in the area and was reporting the matter to a train controller in Townsville when the driver noticed water over the bridge at Little Banyan Creek. The driver applied the brakes in an effort to stop the train ahead of the flood waters, but the train entered the water and stopped on the bridge.
As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the rail traffic crew, analyse data logger information and gather evidential material relating to procedures and flood-water preparedness.
A final report will be released at the end of the investigation.
Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue.
