The ATSB is investigating the contact with wharf by the livestock carrier Angus Express at Broome, Western Australia on 20 April 2018.

The ship berthed starboard side alongside the wharf at low tide on slack water. After the ship was alongside the wharf, a tug was used to keep it alongside two Yokohama fenders, while the mooring lines were run. As the tug applied minimum weight amidships, the forward fender compressed and went under the fender posts.

As a consequence, the ship's bow moved towards the wharf. The pilot ordered the tug to stop pushing, but a deck apendage overhanging the ship's side came into contact with a fixed wharf fender, causing minimal damage.

As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the involved parties and gather additional information. A final report will be released at the end of the investigation.

Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue.
