Summary

The ATSB is investigating an engine vibration and in-flight shutdown involving Qantas Airways Airbus A330, VH-QPI, near Sydney Airport, NSW, on 1 June 2018.

During the initial climb from Sydney Airport, the flight crew detected abnormal engine and airframe vibrations, along with abnormal engine indications from the right engine. The flight crew stopped the climb at 7,000 ft and shut down the right engine. The crew then elected to return to Sydney and conducted an uneventful landing.

As part of the investigation, the ATSB will obtain information from the flight crew, engineering reports and recorded data and gather additional information as required.

A final report will be released at the end of the investigation.

Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue.
