The ATSB is investigating the fuel exhaustion and subsequent forced landing of a Cessna 172M, registered VH-TUX, that occurred approximately 72 km south of Kalgoorlie on 5 January 2018.
The single-engine aircraft, with a pilot and one passenger onboard, was returning to Kalgoorlie-Boulder airport after completing fire spotting duties when the engine RPM reduced to idle. The pilot was unable to restart the engine which required a subsequent forced landing in scrubland. The aircraft sustained minor damage. There were no injuries.
As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview relevant persons, including the pilot and obtain other necessary information.
A report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
