The ATSB is investigating the safe working irregularity/breach involving Sydney Trains passenger service 59-J, near Tempe, NSW on 31 July 2017
At approximately 1000 31 July 2017, Sydney Trains passenger service 59-J was travelling on the Down Illawarra Local line towards Tempe Station, when the driver observed track workers in the danger zone, without adequate protection. The driver applied the train brakes and blew the horn and the workers were able to reach a safe place, before the train passed the workers location. There were no reports of injuries or damage. The track workers were being protected under a method of worksite protection called Lookout Working, which used lookouts as the only safety measure.
A final safety report will be released following the conclusion of the ATSB’s investigation. Should a safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue.
