Summary

At about 1840 on 20 June 2017, after a loss of propulsion, the fishing vessel Venessa S grounded on rocks near Cabbage Tree Island, NSW. The fishing vessel started taking on water and shortly afterwards, broadcast a distress message. Its six crew then abandoned the vessel into a dinghy and were subsequently rescued by the local marine rescue team.

The ATSB has commenced an investigation into this occurrence and is collecting relevant evidence, including interviewing directly involved parties. The evidence will be analysed and a draft investigation report compiled. This draft report will be forwarded to relevant parties for comment prior to the completion and release of the final report.
