The ATSB is investigating the descent below the radar lowest safe altitude involving Embraer EMB-135KL, registered VH-ZJG, near Essendon Airport, Victoria, on 28 October 2017.

The aircraft was being radar vectored for a left circuit to runway 35. On the base leg, the aircraft descend below the assigned altitude, which was the radar lowest safe altitude of 2,100 ft. The aircraft descend to 1,600 ft before the problem was identified, and the fight crew then climbed the aircraft back to 2,100 ft.

The investigation is continuing and will involve reviewing recorded data, interviewing the flight crew and gathering additional data.
