The ATSB is investigating an occurrence at Ballina/Byron Gateway Airport, NSW on 19 September 2017 involving a Robinson R22, VH-MFW, involved in conducting flight training, and a Cessna 208, VH-SJJ.

During final approach to runway 06, the crew of the R22 heard the pilot of the Cessna 208 make a take-off broadcast from the same runway. The pilot of the 208 did not hear the R22 crew's radio call due to frequency congestion and did not sight the R22. The R22 crew manoeuvred to exit the runway as the 208 was in the take-off run to ensure separation was maintained.

As part of the investigation, the ATSB will review the radio transmissions, interview the pilots involved and interview the certified air/ground radio operator.
