The ATSB is investigating a hard landing involving Robinson R44, VH-LGN, at Channel Point, Northern Territory, on 18 August 2017.

Passing 500 ft in a descending turn at approximately 50 kt, the pilot reported the helicopter began to vibrate. The pilot was unable to stop the vibration and conducted a precautionary landing. The helicopter landed hard and severed the tail boom. The helicopter sustained substantial damage and the pilot and three passengers were not injured.

As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilot, obtain an engineering report and gather additional information.

A final safety report will be released following the conclusion of the ATSB’s investigation. Should a safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue.
