The ATSB is investigating an in-flight turbulence event involving a Qantas Boeing 737, registered VH-VZZ, near Canberra Airport, Australian Capital Territory, on 13 March 2017.

Passing flight level 240 on descent, the aircraft encountered severe turbulence. The flight crew turned on the seat belt sign and while returning to their seats one cabin crewmember sustained a serious injury and one cabin crewmember sustained a minor injury. The flight crew, other cabin crew and passengers were not injured and the aircraft was not damaged.

As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilot and gather additional information as required.

A final safety report will be released following the conclusion of the ATSB’s investigation. Should a safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue.
