At about 1544, a semi-trailer travelling south along Phalps Road, Larpent, Victoria collided with a passenger train travelling from Southern Cross Station, Melbourne to Warrnambool, Victoria. The train was carrying 99 passengers at the time of the incident. The locomotive and the four passenger cars derailed and the truck was heavily damaged in the collision. The level crossing was controlled by stop signs. The truck driver, train driver, conductor and 18 passengers were injured in the incident.
The Office of the Chief Investigator Transport Safety (Vic) is investigating this occurrence under the provisions of the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003.
