Completion of the draft investigation report is undergoing management review and anticipated for release to directly involved parties (DIP) for comment in September 2017. Feedback from those parties over the DIP period on the factual accuracy of the draft report will be considered for inclusion in the final report, which is anticipated to be released to the public in November 2017.

As part of the ongoing investigation the ATSB has:

  • interviewed the passenger and a number of other personnel
  • examined the pilot’s records and aircraft documentation
  • reviewed the weather conditions at the time of the accident.

Work has commenced on the draft investigation report, which is anticipated for release to directly involved parties in December 2016. Comments from those parties on the factual accuracy of the draft report will be considered for inclusion in the final investigation report.

The ATSB is investigating an accident involving a Robinson R22 helicopter near Cape Tribulation, Queensland on 7 April 2016.

 The helicopter, with a pilot and passenger on board, collided with water at a position reported to be about 800 m off Cape Tribulation, Queensland.

The passenger exited the helicopter and swam to shore. A search is underway for the pilot and the helicopter.

As part of the investigation the ATSB will:

  • interview the passenger and any witnesses
  • examine the aircraft and pilot documentation
  • review the weather conditions at the time of the accident
