At 0516 on Sunday 15 February 2015, the crew of empty Pacific National coal service NB901 reported to the Network Control Centre North at Broadmeadow (Newcastle) that their train had lost the air and come to a stand at Kankool (369.500 km on the Main North Line near Willow Tree). The train was enroute from Greta to Narrabri for loading.

The assistant driver went to investigate the loss of air - finding that the leading 19 wagons had derailed and come to rest in a cutting. The track was severely damaged during the derailment, however there were no reported injuries.

The ATSB has commenced an investigation into this accident, which will be undertaken by officers from the NSW Office of Transport Safety Investigations, under the provisions of the Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003. Investigators have commenced collecting evidence and statements from involved parties, which will be analysed and a draft investigation report compiled. The draft report will be forwarded to relevant parties for comment prior to the completion and release of the final report.

A final safety report will be released following the conclusion of the ATSB’s investigation. Should a safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue.
