Emergency procedures for Visual flight in IMC

Issue number: AE-2009-050-SI-01
Who it affects:
Issue owner: Aircraft operator
Operation affected: Aviation: Air transport
Background: Investigation Report AE-2009-050
Date: 31 March 2011

Safety issue description

The operator did not have a published emergency recovery procedure for application in the case of inadvertent flight into instrument meteorological conditions.

Current issue status: Adequately addressed
Status justification: The AIC PNG does not consider that, in isolation, the operator’s additional guidance fully addresses the safety issue. However, when considered in conjunction with the requirement under Rule 91.112 for two instrument-rated pilots for flight under the instrument flight rules in the absence of an autopilot, the planned EGPWS upgrades in the operator’s aircraft and the other operator safety action, the AIC PNG is satisfied that the overall response by the operator adequately addresses the safety issue.
