The helicopter was engaged in mustering for a destocking operation. During the flight along a gully, the helicopter struck a SWER (Single Wire Earth Return) powerline at about 130ft AGL. The wire was strung between poles on two adjacent hill tops - span 490 m.

The wire cut the helicopter's control rods at the base of the mast. The helicopter crashed in a nose down attitude in a dry creek bed 200 m from the first point of impact with the wire.
