The aircraft was conducting a survey flight at between 110 to 600 ft AGL. At 83km south of Whyalla the pilot gave a mayday call advising of an engine failure, but did not have sufficient time to give the exact location. After an extensive search the passenger was found alive in Spencers Gulf by fishermen, and a short time later the body of the pilot was found in the same area.
