Hello, I’m Greg Hood, Chief Commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

Easter is one of the busiest times for transport in Australia.

People criss-cross our great continent to spend precious time with family and friends.

It’s an exciting time and a busy time — and transport plays a vital role in connecting millions of Australians.

Whether you’re flying, driving or boating these holidays, I urge you to make safety your major priority.

I especially encourage general aviation pilots to follow the basic principles of safe flying.

Don’t push on if the weather is bad or the light is poor.

Don’t fly any lower than you need to.

Make sure you have more than enough fuel to reach your destination.

All too often we see pilots making mistakes that are largely avoidable. And pilots rarely get a second chance.

As always, the ATSB will be ready to deploy in the evet of an accident. But I sincerely hope this will be a safe Easter for everyone in transport.

On behalf of the ATSB, I wish you a very happy and safe Easter.
