Objective
Safe transport.
Our Mission
The ATSB contributes to the wellbeing of all Australians by maintaining and improving transport safety and public confidence through excellence in:
- independent investigation of transport accidents and other safety occurrences;
- safety data recording, analysis and research; and
- fostering safety awareness, knowledge and action.
Our Environment, Values and Accountability
The ATSB operates in an environment where transport activity is increasing and the Government, Parliament, media and the public expect increasing standards of transport safety, particularly for fare-paying passengers. The ATSB is a bureau within the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government that is operationally independent and has a clear organisational separation from transport regulators, service deliverers and other bodies that may need to be investigated. The ATSB undertakes no blame investigations and analyses safety data without fear or favour. In conveying the results with any necessary recommendations, the ATSB helps to improve future safety and maintain public confidence that the safety of the transport system is not being compromised.
We believe in the importance of Investors in People and work within the framework set by the Australian Public Service Values and Code of Conduct, Portfolio Budget Statements and Departmental accountability requirements. Of particular importance to us are: clear and ethical leadership; fairness, professionalism and judgement; project and risk management; stakeholder consultation and accountability; and encouragement of diversity, teamwork and trust.
Building on our values and strengths, training our people, working closely with stakeholders, and using our resources to best effect, we will produce high-quality safety outputs and thereby contribute to the well-being of all Australians by fostering a safe transport system.
